99 mercury sable thermostat installation

If you have a 3. Just wondering if someone can give me a location of this part. I have spoken to others to a few mechanics and I get the same answer every time. And that would be " on the intake manifold. Was this answer helpful? Disconnect top radiator hose, remove the three bolts, pull off thermostat housing and remove thermostat.

OHC Engine, drain radiator until the coolant level is below the lower coolant level on the engine. Raise vehicle support it with jack stands. Disconnnect the lower radiator hose from the coolant inlet housing, remove the two inlet housing bolts and the housing.

Then remove the thermostat and the O ring from the thermostat housing. I had to get to it from the bottom. There were 3 hoses going to it.

Pay attention how the round o-ring comed out when you get the t-stat out. My overheating problem at that time turned out to be the waterpumps plastic internal impellers came apart and weren't moving any water. I thought that was it, but wasn't sure.

Not sure if it's the Thermostat or something major. If it's the thermostat how can I replace it myself. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the water hose connection. Remove the three water inlet connection retaining bolts.

Remove the water hose connection. Place a drain pan underneath the radiator and open the drain cock using your hands. Drain out approximately half of the coolant in the radiator.

This should minimize any spillage when removing the thermostat housing. Lower down the stock thermostat and o-ring. Remove both the thermostat and the o-ring and discard.

It occurred to me at that time, that my car heater hadn't gotten warm all day. After driving on the freeway for about 5 minutes, I heard a thump as I felt a slight thump against on my right foot gas pedal foot. I looked at the gauges and saw the temperature gauge all the way up at hot. Steam or smoke was also coming from my hood as it was dark and foggy, I don't know whether it was steam, smoke, or both.

I pulled over within 20 seconds and got my car towed home. Days later, I opened the hood and saw a piece of metal size of a license plate with a black rubber thing in it that looks like it belongs in it, laying loose under my hood.

For what it's worth, my then-visiting uncle who has experience working on car engines, said it looked like a "heat shield". Maybe the thump was related to something hitting that, or that hitting something. While troubleshooting, here is the behavior I observed: When I pour water into the coolant overflow reservoir and put the cap back on the reservoir, there appears to be no water leaking or very, very little, I don't remember.

As it appeared to be coming from somewhere higher on the radiator, I concluded the radiator was damaged, and set out to replace the radiator. And that is where I am now. I'm following the directions in the Chilton book, but do not know where to find or what they look like some of the parts it refers to. Here's what I see from beneath my radiator, looking up towards the radiator photo taken from in front of the passenger side front tire.
